Zantac® and NDMA

Ranitidine medications, more commonly known as Zantac®, have been discovered to contain unsafe levels of N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). This substance is known by the Environmental Protection Agency as a “probable human carcinogen.”

An ongoing investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has discovered that ranitidine, the active ingredient in Zantac®, can convert into NDMA after ingestion and can increase to dangerous levels due to body temperature or being stored in higher-than-normal temperatures.

As a result, the FDA has recently ordered a recall of all over-the-counter and prescription ranitidine products from the market in order to protect the public.

NDMA: A Known Carcinogen

The EPA is not the only agency that has declared NDMA as a human carcinogen. It has also been declared as probably carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the U.S. National Toxicology Program.

As NDMA builds up in the body, it can alter DNA and lead to the development of cancer. Recent studies and tests by independent labs have revealed that Zantac® contains between 3,000 and 26,000 times the amount of NDMA that the FDA considers safe.

Symptoms and Complications From Zantac® and NDMA Exposure

Zantac® is already known to have a range of side effects. The most common are headaches, tiredness, and nausea. More serious complications, like liver failure, have occurred in a small number of cases. However, the most devastating side effect is the newly discovered risk of cancer.

Some of these side effects have been proven to be linked to an overexposure to NDMA. If you’ve experienced fever, vomiting, dizziness, abdominal cramps, cardiovascular troubles, nausea, or jaundice, you may be suffering from NDMA overexposure.

Did the Manufacturer Know the Health Risks?

Lawsuits are being filed against the maker of Zantac®, Sanofi, alleging that the manufacturer knew the cancer risks associated with their ranitidine products and failed to warn consumers.

Companies are legally obligated to warn the public of any risks associated with their products. When large drug corporations put their own interests before the safety of consumers, it can devastate lives. They must be held responsible for their reckless actions.
