Talcum powder has many cosmetic and hygienic uses, making it popular as a stand-alone solution or an active ingredient in a number of products. Unfortunately, a growing body of scientific evidence has found that talcum powder is not safe – a fact that large talcum powder manufacturers have known about for years. This has resulted in a handful of high profile class action lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson, one of the biggest manufactures of talcum powder who, as previous cases have uncovered, has known about the dangers posed by talcum powder for at least four decades, yet failed to do anything to protect consumers who use the product.

If you have developed a serious illness or disease after long-term talcum powder use, you may have cause to file suit. Please contact Long & Long online or by calling (251) 432-2277 to schedule a free consultation at our Orange Beach or Mobile, Alabama office right away.

Talcum Powder and Ovarian Cancer

The International Journal of Gynecological Cancer reports that women who use talcum powder in the genital area are at a 30-60% higher risk for developing ovarian cancer. The fine particulates released when talc is applied can enter the ovaries through the vagina, placing even those women who have not used the product for some time at increased risk. Unfortunately, there is little evidence that discontinuing use will decrease risks.

Johnson & Johnson and other talc manufacturers knew about this danger for more than 40 years – but chose to withhold the information from consumers – is unacceptable. Thousands of women may have already died due to this negligent action, and according to many medical professionals, thousands more could be diagnosed with ovarian cancer following talc use for years to come. If you are among them, the Alabama product liability attorneys at our firm are here to take your case and help you get the maximum compensation you deserve.

Other Risks Posed by Talcum Powder

In addition to a heightened risk for ovarian cancer, talcum powder is linked to respiratory issues including:

  • Wheezing or labored breathing
  • Fast, shallow breathing
  • Lung irritation
  • Pneumonia
  • Asthma

Babies are at particular risk for these issues, but anyone can develop them with long-term use. While these problems are not as serious or life threatening as ovarian cancer, they further illustrate the dangers of talc and call into question the inaction of major cosmetic companies who have stubbornly continued to use the product despite equally effective options being readily available.

If you believe your ovarian cancer is the result of talc use, please call (251) 432-2277 to schedule a free consultation today. Our product liability attorneys serve women impacted by talcum powder in all areas of Alabama from our offices in Mobile and Orange Beach.
