This damage can lead to what has been called “vision-threatening toxicity.” Allegations have been made that the manufacturer, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, failed to issue proper warnings about the potential for eye disorders.

Eye Damage Linked to Elmiron®

Allegations have been made that the manufacturer of Elmiron®, generically known as pentosan polysulfate, knew it was issuing a drug with severe dangers and failed to warn users of the risks associated with it. Studies have now shown that users of this prescription medication may suffer serious damage to the macular area of the retina, which can lead to potentially permanent damage. The first connection was published in 2018 in an article for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, with expanded studies appearing a year later. Unfortunately, there have been no recalls of the drug.

Signs of Macular Damage From Elmiron®

Here are some signs that could indicate retinal damage from this drug. If you experience these or any other vision-related symptoms after using this drug, contact a doctor and get in touch with our Elmiron® lawsuit attorneys at Long & Long.

  • Dark spots in the center of your vision
  • Difficulty reading
  • Difficulty adapting to dim light
  • Blurry vision usually presenting central to your field of vision
  • Colors seem dulled and less vivid
  • Straight lines appear skewed, squiggly, or curved

The American Academy of Ophthalmology has said that the signs of damage from Elmiron® can masquerade as common macular degeneration from age, leading to misdiagnosis.
